Press release

Binnensuis is a short theater play/dance performance, made by dancer Janneke Lenzen, musician Bram van den Oever (Gluid) and writer Jehudi van Dijk.

Binnensuis is an experiment. The monologues Jehudi van Dijk wrote for this performance, were recorded by Bram van den Oever with the voice of Janneke Lenzen. He then modified and remixed these recordings into a stunning piece of music. Dancer Janneke Lenzen worked with this material to come up with a fitting choreography. For a long time the three individual creators of Binnensuis worked seperately on this project. Only in the final stage of the process all the parts were fused together to form Binnensuis.

Binnensuis wants to show the disturbing world inside the head of an alienated, lonely woman, who rarely leaves her house and is plagued by a multitude of different phobia and severe neurotic behaviour.

Esc.rec. felt that Gluid’s soundtrack (if you can still call it that) for this performance is so strong and autonomous that it was decided to make a release out of it. The unique, handcrafted artwork for the limited release (50 copies) is cooked up by Vormversterker. The artwork for this (unlimited) version is also made by Vormversterker.

Ssri is the debut album of Robert Witt. His delicate, delay driven, repetitive dubscapes are to drown in. Combined with heavily manipulated but subtle sounds, listening to this album with eyes closed can become a very visual experience. Something like submerging yourself in a relaxing warm bath, dreaming, unwilling to surface again into cold harsh reality.

Press release

Robert Witt graduated in 2005 at the art academy in Kampen (NL) where he started cutting up short sound fragments and using them in installations. After that Robert did some live performances in which he manipulates live input. The input source varies from knitting grannies to sounds emited by ‘ordinary’ surroundings. Robert samples just about anything he finds interesting, such as his own voice, plastic bags, clicks and tics, things out of movies, dutch pirateradio and contemporary music. All this gets fused together in sound collages where the samples become short manipulated fragments. Recognition and amazement are key elements here. The sounds invoke images like an abstract movie soundtrack without the movie.

Grannittin is originally a live performance by Robert Witt, in collaboration with ‘Mevrouw de Vries’, an art project initiated by visual artist Anne Reijse, in which all kinds of every day objects are knitted in real size, mostly by elderly women. The live performance consists out of the live manipulation of sounds emited from contact microphones attached to the knitting needles of the knitting ladies present at the opening of a ‘Mevrouw de Vries’ exhibition.

Grannittin is a double cd-r release in a unique package, handmade with recycled knitted fabrics. The two discs contain a registration of the Grannittin live performance in art gallery Het Langhuis in Zwolle (NL), plus a broad variety of remixes by different artists, made with the original raw audio samples of knitting needles, as recorded by Robert Witt.

Press release

‘The Speechless’ is MAGA’s third album on esc.rec. already. He sure is on the roll… Sounds are more four to the floor and most of it is certainly as raw as some of the tracks on ‘My Mind Machine’. The opening track seems like a clear reference to MAGA’s hearing damage, which prevents him from working with sound for long periods of time on end. A nasty disability indeed for a passionate musician like Marc. The other tracks are also quite dark in a way, but that feeling mostly gets overpowered by the urge to start moving to the ever present groove. The tracks are roaring and growling on acid from time to time and aimed straight at your less delicate motor skills. Ofcourse this doesn’t mean that the beats have lost their delicacy aswell. Just like on his first two albums MAGA’s drumming skills are never far away.

A shiny, shiny, shiny disc full of subtle but sturdy acid driven techno tracks by slo-fi, one of Roel Meelkop’s monikers. Sometimes almost trance inducing, sometimes incorporating minimal experimental electronics and field recordings (was that a breast pump?), but most of the time gently lashing out at the dancefloor.

Press release

Kampen, 1987: turbulent birth of ‘De Achteruitkijkspiegeltjes’. After just one street performance that name quickly changed to ‘De Bronstgieters’. They grow out to be one of the most interesting bands in rammelpop loving Holland. Both music and act reach absurd and hysterical peaks that now and then displays an almost uncanny geniality, only to be compensated by disturbed stupidity that forces even the driest jerk to completely lose it. De Bronstgieters are not only a band, but a theatrical piece of art. An experience that must not be missed, but… they regrettably stopped playing in 1993.

Still holding on to some of their audiocassettes and actually still playing them quite regularly after all these years, I decided to ask them for a re-release on esc.rec. After their first meeting to discuss this proposition, De Bronstgieters sprung back to life and before I could say ‘come-back’, they decided to release a brand new De Bronstgieters compilation and do at least one live performance to present this release to the public.

De Bronstgieters presented their compilation ‘Doos Where The Days’ on the 20th of May 2006 and it was a legendary night! This went way beyond simple nostalgia, although the number of approvingly smiling old fans that were present that night was overwhelming. De Bronstgieters themselves are also very pleased with the way everything comes together and no longer exclude the possibility that they will be performing some more… so be on the look out!

The (10th) esc.rec. release ‘Doos Where The Days’ consists of a carefully made selection of old songs remastered from the original Bronstgieter audiocassettes and some rare (read weird) ‘Bolus Trax’. The cd-r comes in a hand printed 12″ record sleeve with many, many extra’s!

Press release

Music for your eyes is compiled of songs made between 2001 and 2005. All songs are recorded in Transfolmer’s home in Groningen, the Netherlands. The song Friesche veen was composed as part of a festival about moors in the Utrecht area in Holland. Tracks 1,7,8 and 12 are part of the project Reality Tv which will be released on dvd in the beginning of 2006 and contains video and audio mixed in 5.1 surround. The project will also be performed live.

Transfolmer is the name Tjeerd Folmer uses for his activities as musician and composer. He has been a musician for more than 25 years, mainly as bass/guitar player in bands. Since about 8 years he’s working solo, composing his own music with the help of electronics, his vocals and acoustic instruments, mainly acoustic guitar. Transfolmer is also performing live now for 3 years, sometimes in collaboration with other musicians or video artists.

For Tjeerd, music is a necessity of life. In his music he tries to create a personal atmosphere combining the warm acoustic sounds of guitar and vocals with the more abstract sound of electronics. Transfolmer’s music can probably be best categorized somewhere in between singer songwriter and electronic experiment.

Composed and arranged by Bram v/d Oever. All sounds recorded with microphones, most of them on MiniDisc, by Timon Straatsma. Recorded in 2002, created and manipulated in 2002/2003. Originally mastered by John Alonzo. Second master by Jasper Koekoek. Design by Harco Rutgers.

Press release

Just another night in a bar in Kampen city somewhere in February 2002. Two old acquaintances get to talking and of course it’s all about music. One of them (Timon Straatsma) is mainly a connoisseur with an almost obsessive passion for sound, the other (Bram v/d Oever) is a practicing musician. That night a plan is forged: Gluid (sort of dutch for sound).

Timon, armed with a MiniDisc recorder and microphones, will record sounds and atmospheres after which Bram will construct music with these recordings. Main objective is to keep the sounds as pure as possible and to definitely not use any ‘real’ instruments, drum computers, synths or samples from other sources. Only Bram’s strange habit of damaging cd’s from his collection (resulting in jitters, tics and glitches), setting ashtrays on fire, nearly blowing up speakers and making bizarre throat noises was allowed…

From the first session with toy box, wine glasses and pounding on floating barrels arises ‘Ekal Naws’. The two are enthusiastic with the result. Timon now takes his recorder and microphones with him everywhere he goes and Bram creates a load of sketches for more tracks. But than comes a period in which Timon is mainly otherwise occupied and Bram on the other hand has lots of free time on his hands. Bram decides to finish the sketches by himself. After that the forged plan comes apart and Gluid is slowly forgotten.

It isn’t until sometime in 2005 that Bram lets some other people listen to the tracks. A musician friend (Marc Fien aka MAGA) encourages him to send Gluid to esc.rec. and also sound engineer/musician Jasper Koekoek of the Paperboat Collective is enthusiastic and offers to remaster the disc and strike a few tracks. Some striking, mastering and sending happened and here is the result: Gluid!

Press release

Marc Fien started drumming when he was 6 and has played in a variety of bands and projects since. To name but a few: Osiris, Hookah, Ominous Tribe, Rosenbaum Trio, Sand/Elephantum and Tegenpolen (live band). With his love for stoner rock, funk, techno, drum & bass and oh so many other styles he became a resident dj in ‘t Ukien (the place to be in Kampen city) for 7 years. In this period his craze for digital expression took flight and the MAGA project was born. But being a true perfectionist Marc never felt his MAGA tracks were good enough to actually leave his home studio. However, this didn’t interfere with his productivity at all, resulting in a large pile of unreleased tracks…

The MAGA project didn’t go completely unnoticed by some. Marc was invited to join in the ‘J’ee-haw! Remixed’ project. Instead of delivering just 1 remix, he produced 8 of them, 4 of which made it onto the ‘J’ee-haw! Remixed’ double cd-r release (cat.# esc.rec.2).

And now here it is: the first full MAGA release! Or should we say releases… because Marc decided it was time to release not one, but two debut albums at the same time: ‘My Mind Machine’ and ‘The Wired One’.

‘My Mind Machine’ contains some of the earlier MAGA tracks and somehow manages to sound raw and subtle at the same time. The tracks sway from solid dancefloor material to defying listening experience. The hand of a passionate drummer is obvious and never far away. MAGA’s beat driven music seems to find this perfect balance between electronics and live drum sounds.

‘The Wired One’ comes across as slightly less raw in comparison with ‘My Mind Machine’. The sounds are clearer, but keep their jagged edge. Rhythms are once again complex, loose and grooving at the same time, seamlessly integrating live percussion sounds in it’s electronics and vice versa. This album has become a balanced mixture of challenging dancefloor tracks, wandering beats and percussion experiments.

Igor Krutogolov is an experimental multi-instrumentalist and composer from Tel Aviv, Israel. He founded the Klezmer trio Kruzenshtern & Parohod and Igor Krutogolov Karate Band (a mini big band plays grind-core, black metal, rock-n-roll and tango on toy instruments). He also frequently collaborated with Chaos As Shelter, Tidal and Agnivolok as well as various other projects in genres ranging from ambient to improvisation to harsh noise.

Muzika Elektronica is a solo release. Muzika Elektronica is clearly noise orientated and built using an instrumentarium of drums, washing machine, bass (with cello bow), drum machine and voices. Loud eruptions of distorted sounds with an incredible detailed structure leave just the right amount of breathing room in the form of slow (delicious) bass driven beats and quiet, melodical passages. Noise extraordinaire!

Esc.rec. sampler #1 is a compilation with 11 tracks by esc.rec. artists. The artists on this sampler have at this time not actually released their work on esc.rec. yet, but all of them are planning to do so in the near future. From this perspective esc.rec. sampler #1 can be viewed as an appetizer of things to come or to acquire a taste for some of the future esc.rec. releases. And at a nice price of only 2 euro this just might be the introduction you’re looking for. The first 100 copies come in a luxurious metal box, so get them while they’re hot.

Esc.rec. sampler #1 was festively introduced to the masses at the very first esc.rec. label night. This took place while cruising on the river IJssel (the Netherlands) with a massive party boat. The esc.rec. label night featured mind boggling performances by dj Double, Marius, slo-fi and dj Harco. They sure rocked the boat the right way! Other acts that night included Radioactive Man, Coparck, Geigercounting, Patricia’s Greatest Synthesizer Hits and Pixelpasta.

Press release

J’ee-haw! is a dynamic multidisciplinary art duo with (amongst a great deal of other things) a broad interest in sound. Some time ago they released J’ee-haw! Compact Disc, a cd-r filled with long silences that occasionally get rudely interrupted by the yell j’ee-haw! And now they felt it was time for a fitting encore…

J’ee-haw! Compact Disc was taken apart and reconstructed by a large variety of different artists to form J’ee-haw! Remixed. Despite (or maybe thanks to) the seemingly limited audio source, J’ee-haw! Remixed became a diverse double cd-r with 29 superb remixes.

J’ee-haw! is a dynamic multidisciplinary art duo with (amongst a great deal of other things) a broad interest in sound. J’ee-haw! has now released J’ee-haw! Compact Disc, a cd-r filled with long silences that occasionally get rudely interupted by the yell j’ee-haw! However strange, this weird idea apears to have a virtually endless set of possibilities. It’s a great incentive, gentle but firm interruption and unintended accent in any conversation, occupation or interfering sound source. I bet you too can think of one or two applications for this fine disc right now…
