Press release

Sediment is a new series in the Esc.rec. catalogue. It is in a completely new ‘one-of-a-kind-art-object-directly-related-to-live-performance’ category. The three Frayed Air albums by Jeroen Diepenmaat are the first three Sediment releases: Sediment 1a, Sediment 1b, and Sediment 1c. You are currently looking at Sediment 1a.

The Frayed Air albums (S.1a, S.1b and S.1c) are the record of three live performances by Jeroen Diepenmaat at the ‘Muziek bij de Buren’ festival in De Perifeer. During these performances grooves are made in one side of blank vinyl records, while playing simultaneously on four turntables, using knives and sand paper. Thus Jeroen Diepenmaat physically sculpts a live soundscape with a gradual accumulation of subtle pops, clicks, hiss and noise, occasionally using additional sounds from pre-recorded vinyl. The result is extremely meditative, ingenious and beautiful.

Afterwards the recordings of these concerts are cut on the other side of the same blank vinyl that was used as an instrument during the performance. This makes all three Frayed Air albums totally unique and directly linked to the live experience where they originated; they are a concert registration and an instrument united in one object.

Frayed Air comes on black 12″ vinyl in a white outer sleeve and a green inner sleeve, both laser cut. The release details are hand written on the back by Jeroen Diepenmaat.

Jeroen Diepenmaat is a visual artist with a predilection for sound. In his works he combines visual elements with audio. This ranges from installations that generate sound, to drawings of 7″ records, to objects that require to be used for performances.

Diepenmaat likes to poetically point to almost forgotten details or focus on small sounds. And just as sound always takes time, the passing of time is also often reflected in his site-specific installations for exhibitions. One (generally unnoticed) element in the exhibition space is carefully changed to become a determining factor.

In short; Jeroen Diepenmaat creates omnifarious works, but always with the following keywords in mind: poetic, subtle, small, detail, sound, vinyl, slow, focus, time.

Jeroen Diepenmaat’s work was shown a.o. in Museum voor Moderne Kunst in Arnhem (NL), Martha Museum in Herford (D), La Casa Encendida in Madrid (SP), Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston (USA), Montevideo – Dutch Institute for Media Art in Amsterdam (NL), Extrapool in Nijmegen (NL), Serralves in Porto (P), Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam (NL).

Press release

NEW 10 presents 10 new upcoming producers. The electronic talent from the east of the Netherlands.

With the enormous flood of new music being poured out over the Internet on a daily basis it becomes increasingly difficult to discern new talent. Nieuwe Electronische Waar (NEW) has been around for 10 years and has always ensured that talented producers from the East Netherlands will still be heard. This platform for producers of electronic music presents her tenth release with producers you will want to hear more often. Let them introduce you to Bremer, Clubfratsen, The Welvins, Rude Gullit, Cloack, Monom3, Levingtquatre, Haze, Stefano and Sonurber. From trap to dub, from pure experiment to dancefloor material, the whole spectrum is covered by the 10 producers of NEW 10.

Over the past 10 years, NEW has shown to be of lasting value. Through this platform more than 560 producers have shared their music that until then wasn’t heard beyond their bedroom. Knarsetand, Game Face, De Sluwe Vos, Steve Mensink, Dotlights, Hide and Scream, Sam a la Bamalot, Darko Esser, all these producers in diverse genres presented their first tracks at NEW, long or surprisingly short before they were recognized nationally and/or internationally.

NEW offers all affiliated producers opportunities to develop themselves and their visibility, and selects a small group every year who are given a further stimulus. NEW does this not only with the release of NEW 10, but also by bringing these producers under the attention of bookers and promoters, by offering them the opportunity to gain experience with live shows at various venues, clubs and festivals, and to develop their skills through workshops and master classes.

NEW 10 is available as a free download from www.nieuweelectronischewaar.nl and is digitally distributed through a variety of online channels by Esc.rec.

Nieuwe Electronische Waar is a joint project of productiehuis Oost-Nederland, Doornroosje & Burgerweeshuis. N.E.W. collaborates with Luxor Live, Hedon, Atak, Oddstream, GRAP, Drift, Esc.rec, ArtEZ Conservatorium Deventer, Provincie Overijssel Programma Podiumplan, and is always open to collaborations with new partners.

Press release

Cuarto is a solo project that fuses acoustic instrumentation with computer processing and sampling. Cuarto (Max Feriche) is from Barcelona, but recently moved to London, where he composed, recorded, mixed and mastered ‘Segundas Partes’.

The composition, recording, editing and mixing of each song has been almost simultaneous, making it difficult to tell where one thing begins and the other one ends. The album has a warm, intricate and rich collage sound, occasionally slightly reminiscent of The Books in their early years.

‘Segundas Partes’ means ‘second parts’ or ‘sequels’. Cuarto’s first work was released on Bestiar, a netlabel from Barcelona. Bestiar also co-releases Segundas Partes.

This release is available as a free or paid download.

Press release

Söll is Jorge Pandeirada, musician and composer from Portugal. Interested in the concepts of randomness and what many regard as musical error. Pandeirada has a degree in Music Production and Electronic Music at ESART, and right now he’s a master student in Sound Design at FEUP.

This album is Söll’s debut in electronic music, a field which he ingeniously explores. In doing so he produces a sound that is rich, detailed, fine-grained, hypnotizing and well, timeless.

Listening to Cävv is like listening to the perfect soundtrack to an abstruse story, slowly unfolding. Like gliding into in the dreamworld of an abstract creature living in darkness, oblivious to light. Like probing the most placid moment of something monstrous. Like a deep reflection of consciousness.

All in all this album is an immersive experience, reinforced by the artwork with fascinating photography by Jorge Pandeirada’s father.

Please note: the release date is June 10, but the production of the CD is slightly delayed and ships out on June 27.

Press release

You Better Go Now was written, recorded and mixed at Microwolf’s home over a period of five years, using an acoustic guitar, a Casio keyboard, a banjitar, a snare drum, maracas, pots and pans, a Juno synthesizer and numerous other sounds and instruments, all processed through uninformed misuse of Logic Pro. The album was conceived during some rather intense years, in which, like the protagonist in Hangman, Microwolf was looking for people, places and things that would rescue him – eventually learning that he should have been looking for something else entirely. He likes to think all the songs in the album reflect on this theme one way or another.

The limited edition CD (50 pcs.) is released on February 28 and comes in a handmade cover with a booklet and liner notes. The download version is released today, February 24.

A small sister album was also created during the making of You Better Go Now named You Are The Everything.

Press release

The Second Continent is the debut album from producer and phonographer Frond. Blending gentle acoustics, intense electronics and field recordings, this is a personal journey through a landscape of forgotten melodies and vivid textures. A haunting beauty lingers inside these tracks, which draws you in deeper every time you listen to them.

Richard Bultitude has produced music since he was a teenager and in his mid-twenties launched his first project Point B, the back catalogue of which features numerous atmospheric beatless tracks which were the precursor to Frond.

The Second Continent is the first album in the Esc.rec. catalogue to be released on a (limited) audio cassette. Not just because releasing audio cassettes is ‘hot’ right now, but because the tape sound aesthetic compliments Frond’s album. Just like the selected artwork by Holger Lippmann does.

German artist Holger Lippmann began his career with traditional materials but moved into computational design and generative art in the early 90s. The piece ‘perlin scape 24’, which features on this record, was completed in 2012 and comprised of 12 plates of laser engraved wood.

Press release

Souvenirs van de Woeste Grond is a project initiated by Landscape Overijssel and Kunstenlab. In this project two artists collected stories about the countryside landscape in order to save them from obscurity. In the second phase of the project eight different artists make a souvenir based on the collected stories. These souvenirs are available at different locations in the province of Overijssel. You can find more information at www.souvenirsvandewoestegrond.nl.

This CD is one of those eight souvenirs and is released by Esc.rec. in a limited edition, with a handmade cover by Harco Rutgers. But it’s also available as a digital download, if you prefer that.

This is a release with specially composed music by several artists, selected by Harco Rutgers, in the context of the project ‘Souvenirs van de Woeste Grond’. The six compositions are based on the stories collected by Heidi Linck about Losser and it’s surroundings. The release itself is also based on one of those stories.

Introductions to the stories that form the basis for this release can be found in the booklet accompanying the limited release. They can be read in their entirety at www.souvenirsvandewoestegrond.nl (in Dutch).

The six artists who composed a track for this compilation are: Gluid, Gareth Davis, Machinefabriek, Wouter van Veldhoven, Reinier van Houdt and Weerthof.

Press release

Nieuwe Electronisch Waar (NEW) presents a new wave of talented producers from the Netherlands.

Where? The eastern part of the Netherlands, that’s where the new sound is coming from. Once again NEW presents a compilation of twelve tracks from a new generation of talented producers. NEW has a good standing as a headhunter, as they were among the first to notice the talent of De Sluwe Vos, Steve Mensink, Sam a la Bamalot and Julien Mier. With NEW 9.0 the names of Adam Link, Dotlights, Hemisphere, Levingtquatre, Knotted Sheets, Marsman, MSNTHRPX, PHACTS., Quibus, Strapatsen, Visitors and She Has A Cold , Cold Heart are introduced.

Levingtquatre, Marsman and Phacts are producers who have already established a name for themselves online with several releases. Strapatsen, Dotlights, Hemisphere, and She Has A Cold, Cold Heart, are four completely new names, the raw talent that NEW knows to tap like no other. Knotted Sheets and MSNTHRPX were also selected for NEW 9.0, and their new adventurous tracks show they are making big steps forward. Under other aliases Quibus (Knarsetand), Visitors (Bertin) and Adam Link (Near Earth Object) were all selected for previous releases of NEW. Even when they break new musical ground, their talent comes to the surface immediately. Memorize these twelve names, because the expectations for this NEW wave are high.

Initially, the mission of NEW was to bring producers down from their attic and on to the stage. Nowadays the challenge has shifted to introduce producers who found a niche and fans online, to a local audience, bookers and programmers. NEW achieves this, not only with the release of the album NEW 9.0, but also through showcases and workshops. Producers have the opportunity to gain live experience with performances at various venues, clubs and festivals. At the annual NEW Conference and with studio days at ArtEZ, producers can acquire more knowledge and skills.

Nieuwe Electronische Waar began in 2005 as a platform for producers from Nijmegen, and expanded in 2010 to the eastern provinces of the Netherlands. This year, 90 tracks were submitted by producers from all over Gelderland and Overijssel. The twelve tracks on NEW 9.0 were selected by the core team of NEW, assisted by the jury members Harco Rutgers (Esc.rec.), Jonatan Brand (Doornroosje), Theo Ploeg (The Quietus / Gonzo), Jeroen van den Bogert (Alles Los), Pascal Rietman (8Bahn), en Mark IJsendoorn (Eclectro).

Besides this free download, NEW 9.0 also appears physically as a CD in a limited edition, which is available for free at two release parties, on Saturday, February 1 at Het Burgerweeshuis, Deventer and on Saturday, February 8 at Doornroosje, Nijmegen.

Not only the twelve selected producers, but all other members of NEW are offered opportunities to develop their music and skills. On the site every producer can create a profile and make his music be heard. All tracks can be submitted for the next release, NEW 10, and throughout the year NEW keeps their ears pricked to spot new talent.

Nieuwe Electronische Waar is an initiative by productiehuis Oost-Nederland, Doornroosje & Burgerweeshuis. NEW collaborates with a.o. Esc.rec., Valkhof Festival, KCG, ArtEZ Conservatorium, Provincie Overijssel Programma Podiumplan, Zwarte Cross, Twente Biennale, Have a Nice Day, 8Bahn, Eclectro, Alles Los and Shipwrec.

Press release

For the Disc Jockey compilation, Esc.rec. invited a diverse selection of artists to deliver a track about DJ’s. Not for DJ’s, not by DJ’s, not even with DJ’s… just about DJ’s. The result is a caleidoscopic impression of the world of the Disc Jockey as seen through the eyes of the featured artists.

It seems there are many approaches to producing a track about DJ’s. And there are positive, negative and neutral points of view on this phenomenon represented here. In fact, even the word Disc Jockey is open for multiple interpretations. Just consider the many differences between radio DJ’s, party DJ’s and turntablists alone…

Not to go into detail about every single track, but to illustrate the broad variety of approaches… Some artists use lyrics to get their point across, others use samples, records and sounds. Some honor known DJ’s with a tribute, others use parody to strike ‘m down without mercy. Some emphasize the physical and auditory qualities of playing records, others dive into the culture surrounding DJ’s. Some have allowed themselves to be inspired by DJ’s (or one specific DJ), others use existing songs about DJ’s as raw source material in an abstract composition. In some of the tracks the link with DJ’s is crystal clear, in others you might have to do some research first (track titles are a good place to start in most cases).

‘De DJ Is Een Mietje’ (The DJ Is A Sissy) by Bedhelm was actually the trigger to finally execute the idea for this compilation, which had been slumbering for years in the mind of Harco Rutgers, the record label owner. That makes this one of the few tracks that wasn’t specifically created for this release.

Mentz is Stephan Raab, a jazz fanatic and music collector from the Netherlands making (small) musical collages for many years now. With roots in the early days of internet music (member of “tracker scene” groups like tokyodawn records and others), he developed a love for the limited possibilities of sample based music production. This concept is still the foundation for Mentz music. Building layers of found sound, recording other musicians and using these recordings as individual sample resources, he creates strange compositions with a unique warm sound.

The Lines EP features four dreamy collages mostly produced and recorded in the summer before Mentz moved to Switzerland where he lives now. Main instrument on this EP is the trumpet played by Krisztián Ákos Muhari from Hungary, who studied at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague where he and Mentz became friends. Other musicians from earlier recording sessions featured on this EP are Wouter Suren (clarinet) and Bart Knol (rhodes).

Press release

The Out of Control EP takes you on an electro-acoustic journey through a (not so) ordinary day.

Glitchy electronics, neo-classical and unlikely musical instruments such as sewing machines, toothbrushes, daxophones, elastic bands, pvc pipes, balloons, whirly tubes and vuvuzela’s.

Originally this music is the soundtrack for circustheatre play ‘Huis op Hol’ (previously known as ‘Out of Control’) by Wietske Vogels about a peculiar female inventor who builds overly complicated contraptions to make her everyday routines into something gracefully awesome.

This release is available as a pay-what-you-want download, but also as an exceptional limited edition. Here it comes… a wooden usb-stick, encased in a bar of soap, home-made by Weerthof! No more vinyl or CD’s clogging up your house if you don’t want to! Only 50 numbered copies of these are made, straight from the Weerthof cooking laboratory.

(Some reactions to the smell of the Out of Control soap: “This smell reminds me of the boat of my grand-parents”, “It smells a bit electrical”, “Somewhere between an scullery and a workshop”, “Like drinking mint tea on Texel”.)

Weerthof is a musician, artist and producer of soundtracks and catchy pop songs hailing from Den Bosch. This is his fifth release, and his first instrumental one in almost 10 years. He seems to have returned a bit to his roots of fusing classical music with IDM, modifying trivial sounds and building objects to create those specific sound combinations. Yet bringing along the exploration of pop and early music from his 2012 album ‘Hoi’, resulting in a light, somewhat eclectic yet distinctly Weerthovian flavour.

Press release

This is the first solo work by J. S. Rozendaal to surface – apart from early cassette and download releases – in a limited clear vinyl edition of 300. It was initially self-released, but shortly after that it was welcomed into the Esc.rec. catalogue. Adopted with open arms.

Originally this electro-acoustic recording was an installation piece in one of the main streets of Rotterdam, which played the music in an endless loop. This LP cuts the original recording in two halves, both clocking in at almost 25 minutes. Two beautifully balanced compositions that combine field recordings with heavily manipulated vocals and conventional instruments like bass, Thai flute and piano. Adventurous, captivating trips into a remarkable and carefully composed world of sound. Or, like the critics say: “A beautiful record, worth every groove”.

J. S. Rozendaal is a Rotterdam based musician, writer and filmmaker. From the late eighties to the early nineties, he produced various cassette releases with ambient and harsh noise collages. He contributed to the scores of various documentaries and films like Brainstorm (2001), Cheese! (2001), Building for Brussels (2010) Interzone (2011), Rotterdam 2040 (2013) and many short animation films.

Parallel to his musical solo career he participated in various musical projects like Room 101 (Hardcore/noise), De Vogels (Psychedelic improv), The New Earth Group (Psychedelic jazz), The Minor Details (Indie), Wild Wild Ambient Boys (Wild Wild Ambient), Hond & Wolf (Folk).

Press release

Most of the material for this EP was constructed by Jonas The Plugexpert during train rides between The Hague and Nijmegen. Small sketches to kill time and clear the head after the more ‘serious’ composing at the Royal Conservatory. Now that he’s done studying in The Hague, Jonas found the time to rework his many sketches and include some new influences in the process. A small selection of the resulting tracks found its way onto the Den Haag – Nijmegen EP.

Expect delicious freaking on the beats, heavy bass, juke grooves, some 90’s rave synths, the occasional laidback vibe, excellent sampling and a whiff of old skool jungle… Enjoy!

Do also check out the self released Electra EP by Jonas The Plugexpert. Similar to the Den Haag – Nijmegen EP, most of the tracks on that release were started during daily commuting.

Press release

Jorg (producer, DJ and record label owner of Lomechanik fame) brings us his latest work. And it’s released through Esc.rec. this time.

Please take your time for this nightly narrative album, meticulously constructed of field recordings and soundscapes, evolving into more beat orientated pieces and energetic, uptempo tracks. Jorg takes you on a stroll through cold industrial places and wanders with you through abandoned suburbs.

Headphones on and let the images flow. Eventually we end up in a basement with fucked up punks wearing hiphop T-shirts, banging their heads against the speakers. Unsafe. When we come out, it’s already light and it’s hurting our eyes.

This release is available as a pay-what-you-want download, but also as a very limited CD in a handsome digipak with stamped artwork. Only 50 numbered copies of these are available. Be quick!

Press release

Roughly Human is the title of the debut album by Plastic Surgery Icon, for which he spent the last three months of 2012 recording non-stop. The idea was initially to record some basic acoustic guitar songs that he had lying around for years, maybe for the release of a short EP, but additional new songs appeared quickly. To three of the four old songs, vocals were added, along with other instruments. Three of the new songs were more math rock oriented. In the end there was an album’s worth of material that turned out mostly acoustic, but stylistically varying between folky singer/songwriter pieces, some catchy pop tunes and gradually escalating mathy madness.

Influences include Sun Kil Moon, Deerhoof, Super Adventure Club, Animal Collective, Spoelstra, Lisa, Amy en Shelley, hipster haircuts, cats and internet messageboard spambots. Since the iconic ambassador of plastic surgery only had knowledge of a computer programme that hadn’t been updated since 2002 he decided to use that. After recording, he got in contact with Greg Saunier of Deerhoof fame, who was friendly enough to master it and make it sound vivid and punchy. Plastic Surgery Icon used to play in Dutch noise rock band Boutros Bubba and still plays in Amsterdam based garage band Apneu.

The Delusion EP is the debut of Ifang, a 17 year old producer from Nijmegen. This actually started out as a school project, but soon grew out to be so much more than that, making it a vessel for the discovery of his own talent and passion for music production. He is now determined to pursue a career in music, which is probably a wise decision, because this is a high quality, well produced debut. The three tracks feature warm and crispy electronics, guitar, processed field recordings and (movie) samples. Delusion is a diamond in the rough, triggering Esc.rec. to support Ifang on his journey to higher grounds. Eyes peeled for more Ifang in the future.

Delusion is available as a pay-what-you-want download, but also in a very limited CD-r edition. The CD-r release comes in a digipak with hand-painted artwork (Indian ink) by Ifang’s father, Peter Bremer. Only 50 of these were made and they are all different, so be quick to order if you want one!

Press release

With the software that’s available these days you can have a full studio at home. And thanks to social media, your music can be heard all over the world. Ever more often young producers are making a name for themselves internationally before anyone in their own town has ever heard of them. Nieuwe Electronische Waar (N.E.W.) keeps their ears perked to discover and presents a new generation of talented producers from East Netherlands. These names you should definitely remember.

N.E.W. is a platform and network for producers in Gelderland and Overijssel. Every year N.E.W. releases a new album with twelve tracks from producers they will feature prominently for the coming year. Generation NEW 8.0 consists of Alias Lou, Julien Mier, GameFace, Kalima, Knarsetand, Knotted Sheets, MSNTHRPX, Near Earth Object, Raymon Brugman, Sinewave77, Sam A La Bamalot + Asterisms, and Yoeri. In their music you can hear the influence of everything that is happening in electronic music at the moment. The dominance of the four to the floor time is long past, and influences are drawn from ambient, acid, dubstep, future garage, glitch, juke, and trap.

Sam a la Bamalot and Kalima (formerly known as Radion) are represented with a track for the third consecutive year. Knarsetand, Near Earth Object, and Yoeri made their debut last year, and made strong follow ups. With eight new names a lot of new talent from across the eastern Netherlands is discovered. A professional jury made a choice from over a hundred entries to come to this selection of twelve tracks. The jury included amongst others other Erik Delobel, programmer of Hedon in Zwolle, and Harco Rutgers, owner of the record label Esc.rec.

This draft of producers will be promoted by NEW all year long in many different ways. First of all there’s the release of the compilation album NEW 8.0. Free digital copies are available through nieuweelectronischewaar.nl and record label Esc.rec. takes care of the online distribution. Foremost, these producers will get the chance to perform at showcases presented by N.E.W. at a number of club nights and festivals.

The album will also be released as a CD, available for free at the release parties. On Saturday, March 2, there is a release party at Het Burgerweeshuis in Deventer, and on Saturday, March 9 at Doornroosje in Nijmegen. The selected producers will perform perform both as dj’s and with live sets.

Next to releasing their work and offer them a stage to perform, N.E.W. also offers these affiliated producers a chance to develop. At the site nieuweelectronischewaar.nl producers in East Netherlands are able to create a profile, share their latest productions with other members and offer each other feedback. All new tracks are considered for the next compilation release, NEW 9.0.

NEW is a platform for producers and electronic music from East Netherlands with the specific goal to discover and develop new talent in this field. There are many talented producers in East Netherlands that otherwise would not be heard. NEW is devoted to the development of these producers, both in the studio and on stage, by offering showcase performances, organizing workshops and releasing a new compilation every year. NEW is a collaboration between productiehuis ON, Het Burgerweeshuis and Doornroosje and has been made possible with the help of the municipalities of Nijmegen and Deventer and the province of Overijssel.

NEW Partners: Productiehuis Oost-Nederland, Het Burgerweeshuis, Doornroosje & Merleyn, Esc.rec., Hedon, Atak, Gogbot, KCG, Artez, Eclectro, Cultuurwolven, 3voor12 Overijssel/Gelderland.

Initially this music was commissioned by theatre company Noortje Licht as a soundtrack for ‘De Gedaanteverwisseling’ (The Metamorphosis), based on the book by Franz Kafka.

The show/installation (2010) was a seamless combination of acting, extremely inventive video projections by Douwe Dijkstra and music by Bram van den Oever (Gluid). Quite exceptional for such a small theatre company. Check this promo video.

After some minor alterations, this soundtrack now became a breathtaking stand-alone Gluid release. And just like the world famous psychological thriller by Kafka, it haunts you with hallucinatory beauty.
